Oracle 10g RAC :: FAQ

FAQ FAQ OCPdba.Net

  • How much did this cost?

I will assume that you have two PC's capable of running Oracle 10g on SuSE..

I bought most of these items off of ebay.... so these prices are ballpark of what you should expect to pay

Of course your costs may vary, I have over priced a few things, be patient, you may possibly come in at $150.

    1) SCSI Storage Enclosure, disks, adpaters and cables
    Adaptec AHA-2940UW SCSI Card $30.00 x 2 =$60.00
    SCSI-3 68-pin male to 68-pin male cables $20.00 x 2 =$40.00
    Seagate ST34371W SCSI Drives $20.00 x 2 =$40.00
    SCSI Tower $50.00 x 1 =$50.00
    2) Networking
    Netgear FA310TX PCI NIC $10.00 x 2 =$20.00
    10/100 Crossover Cable $10.00 x 1 =$10.00
    3) Optional
    SCSI Terminator (good for tests) $20.00 x 1 =$20.00
    TOTAL $240.00
  • How do you tell Oracle to use the interconnect network card specifically?

Create entries in /etc/hosts for each machine...

      #/etc/hosts
      10.0.0.41 safa-rac.ilmtech.com safa-rac
      10.0.0.51 marwa-rac.ilmtech.com marwa-rac

then use the internal name wherever you want the interconnect to be used

So for example, If you setup a TNS Names entry in tnsnames.ora You would use safa-rac for the hostname
thereby forcing the interconnect to be used.

The key is that both machines need to have the internal IP addresses within their /etc/hosts files
